This unsalaried primary EYFS teacher training programme leads to a recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and PGCE comprising of 60 credits at Masters level.
For the duration of the course you will be in school for 4 days a week, apart from assessed periods where you will be in school 5 days.
You will take part in our bespoke twilight Programme, delivered by outstanding practitioners from partner schools within the Alliance. All practitioners have strengths in ensuring the progress of vulnerable groups of learners and in leading the development of innovative and creative pedagogy.
You will develop the professional knowledge, understanding and skills required to be an outstanding practitioner through participation in training such as:
Our programme is further enhanced by attendance one day a week at Sheffield Hallam University for further subject-specific development and accreditation work. Sheffield Hallam University will also provide intensive preparation for your school placement at the start of the autumn term.
In order to be eligible for the programme you would need to hold the following qualifications:
At least a Grade C/Level 4 in GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.
For Primary you would also require at least a Grade C/Level 4 in GCSE Science or equivalent.
A Degree at a 2:2 or above, preferably in the subject you wish to apply for.
Before you start the course, you will need to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) security check.
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.
Josie Thirkell IOE is a Lead Partner institution working with Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), the Accredited Initial Teacher Training provider. In 2017 The Sheffield Institute of Education (SIoE) received their first ever ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted for early years’ teacher training – alongside an ‘Outstanding’ rating for their Primary teacher training and ‘Good’ ratings for Secondary/Post-16.
On completion of the course you will receive a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) including 60 masters credits as well as Qualified Teacher status (QTS).
When you apply on the Department for Education (DfE) website, your application will go through an initial screening process. If your application makes it through the initial screen, you will be formally invited to an interview in one of our School Direct partner schools.

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.
To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.
