Course Details

About the Course

This PGCE course prepares you to teach children in the 3 to 7 age range as a general primary teacher. It is a very practical course with around two-thirds of the time spent in schools, mostly working with teachers and pupils, and around one third spent on directed study, with partnership training in the University and school.

Our programme is innovative and forward thinking, with 3 clear strands: The National Curriculum for strong subject knowledge and teaching strategies to ensure pupils make good progress; Professional Practice, such as inclusion and effective behaviours for learning so that you are confident to meet the needs of all children; Your personal well-being including mindfulness, positive psychology and managing workload.

Want to train and make a difference to children’s life chances? There is no better place to train than in our diverse partner schools. We offer experiences that few providers can, such as experiencing schools in challenging socio economic circumstances and achieve outcomes well above national expectations.

Our partnership is an amazing place to train and committed to its vision and values; ‘providing inspirational training for aspirational teachers and a genuine commitment to professional learning and evidence based practice.’
You may be eligible for a student loan. These are normally for undergraduate courses but you can also apply if you do postgraduate teacher training.

Interview process

When you apply on the Department for Education (DfE) website, your application will go through an initial screening process. If your application makes it through the initial screen, you will be formally invited to an interview in one of our School Direct partner schools.

You may be eligible for financial support from the government  if you choose a course without a salary. This support includes bursaries, scholarships and loans.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Disability Support at interview: If you have a sensory or physical disability, dyslexia, a mental health or medical condition, please let us know if you need some support during the selection process.

We recommend you contact both ourselves and University Admissions within three days of receiving an invite to interview so we can arrange (for example) extra time in order to complete reading or written tasks if required; a sign language interpreter; a note taker; materials in a different format; wheelchair access.

We will try to accommodate your requests so that you can fully participate in the interview without any disadvantage.

Disability Access All training venues and schools must meet statutory requirements for access, but individual needs will be accommodated wherever possible.
