About the Course

You will develop expertise in teaching Design and Technology across Key Stages 3 and 4, working alongside experienced mentors and subject specialists. This programme will equip you with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to create engaging lessons that inspire students in design, engineering, and innovation.

School Placements

Throughout the course, you will gain hands-on classroom experience in two contrasting secondary settings:

  • Placement 1: Parkside School, where you will teach Design and Technology across Key Stages 3 and 4, developing your classroom confidence and subject expertise.
  • Placement 2: A mainstream secondary school, where you will spend a minimum of six weeks
    broadening your teaching experience.

You will spend Tuesday to Friday in school, refining your teaching practice under the guidance of experienced mentors. This consistent classroom exposure ensures that you continuously develop your confidence and competence as a teacher.

Training and Support

The teacher training programme is delivered by teaching experts, including subject specialists, experienced mentors, and leaders in education, ensuring you receive the highest-quality preparation for your teaching career.

  • You will work closely with subject specialists in engineering, graphic design, food technology, and more. 
  • You will receive dedicated one-to-one mentoring, with weekly feedback and tailored guidance.
  • Your teaching skills will develop progressively through structured school-based training in creating positive learning environments, lesson planning, and practical teaching.

Each placement school will assign you a dedicated mentor who will:

  • Observe and support your teaching practice.
  • Provide formative feedback to help refine your skills.
  • Hold weekly mentor meetings to guide your progress.
You may be eligible for a student loan. These are normally for undergraduate courses but you can also apply if you do postgraduate teacher training.

Entry Requirements

Qualifications needed

In order to be eligible for the programme you would need to hold the following qualifications:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree (typically a 2:2 or higher) in Design and Technology or a related subject
  • GCSE grade C/4 in English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • If you do not hold a degree in Design and Technology or a closely related subject, we will consider applicants with an A-Level in Design and Technology at grade C or above.
  • A desire to develop inclusive and engaging teaching practices.

Other requirements

Before you start the course, you will need to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) security check.

Fees and financial support

As an apprentice trainee, you will not be required to pay student fees

Exceed SCITT is part of Exceed Academies Trust in Bradford and is an accredited provider of Qualified Teacher Status, we hold an Ofsted rating of Outstanding, a recognition of the quality training we provide. We work closely with our School Direct partners in Bradford, Keighley and Leeds.

Our unique programme maximises the time spent in school and access to tutors with up to date professional practice and expertise drawn from their work in schools. We have an excellent track record of supporting trainees in completing the programme for QTS and gaining employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher

Interview process

When you apply on the Department for Education (DfE) website, your application will go through an initial screening process. If your application makes it through the initial screen, you will be formally invited to an interview in one of our School Direct partner schools.

You may be eligible for financial support from the government  if you choose a course without a salary. This support includes bursaries, scholarships and loans.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to work in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

 

If you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for salaried courses is the Skilled Worker visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa you need to be sponsored by your employer.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

 

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
